For me, having hypersensitive skin means going through periods where it feels like nothing helps. Especially over the past year, with mask-wearing and pandemic anxiety, my already acne– and eczema-prone skin has become a serious challenge at a time when I could really use a break. Gentle moisturizers started me on a road to success, along with drinking more water, and I even occasionally wore sheet masks underneath my N95 before going out, putting a barrier between my breakouts and the rough texture of the masks. But during the colder months, that became uncomfortable and far too cold on my face.
I was on the hunt for a spot treatment that would provide that protective barrier between my mask and any blemishes but one that didn’t leave my skin feeling cold or rub off on the mask (ultimately defeating the point). After going through a number of products that left stains on my masks, I finally discovered Loli Beauty’s Arnica Elderberry Jelly Organic All Day Maskne + Spot Rescue.
I’ve loved Loli for a while because of its sustainability efforts. The brand is founded on the fact that food is what nourishes and fuels both our bodies and skin. All its products are concocted with ingredients you could technically eat, which makes me feel safe about applying them to my skin. When they launched this product earlier this month, I was quick to give it a go.
The spot treatment is made of a clean mix of ingredients, including elderberry, to fight spots and reduce swelling; witch hazel, for purification of pores; glycerin, which is palm-oil free and hydrating; and arnica, for redness and inflammation reduction. You can leave it on all day if you want to, and it stays put underneath a mask. It dries clear, so no one on Zoom will be the wiser. You can also layer it underneath or on top of your moisturizers. I typically wash my face, then apply the Loli jelly on areas where I need the help. I wait for that to dry, then pat on my hydrating serum along with moisturizer and SPF. At night I will sometimes use it as an overnight spot treatment; I find it’s gentle enough that it won’t dry out or suffocate my skin.
I love that beyond the refillable jar—I can already imagine using it to store my yogurts or berries when I’m on the go or perhaps as a travel-size container for lotions—it comes with a compostable label, and it’s protected on its journey by an upcycled hemp sleeve. All in all, this product has made me feel less stressed when breakouts arise because now I know I have something that works to reduce their impact—and my impact on the earth.
