Prince William and Prince Harry went for a long walk before the Duke of Sussex quit royal life and moved to the US with his wife Meghan Markle, a royal source has said.
The two brothers took some time to talk after the Sandringham summit in which details of Megxit were negotiated.
However, a source claimed they did not leave the walk “as friends”.
William was reportedly upset because of Harry and Meghan’s surprise launch of their “Sussex Royal” website before the summit – but he did not think his brother would shortly move to America.
When the Queen later decided the Sussexes could no longer use the word “royal” in their future commercial work, a statement appeared on their website which William thought was disrespectful.
The statement read: “While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy … over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ … or … ‘Royal’ …”
Both “the content and that it’s still online is staggering”, a senior royal source told The Sunday Times.
A source close to Prince William said he felt the statement was “insulting” and that he was still thinking about it at the Commonwealth Day service one year ago – Harry and Meghan’s final engagement as working royals.
They explained: “That was it for William, he felt they’d blindsided the Queen in such an insulting and disrespectful way.”
Harry explicitly denied the accusation in his and Meghan’s bombshell tell-all with Oprah, saying: “No, I never blindsided my grandmother. I have too much respect for her.”
In the bombshell interview, Meghan and Prince Harry also accused an unnamed member of the family of voicing concerns over the potential skin colour of her then-unborn son Archie.
The Duchess also confessed to having suicidal thoughts during her time living in London while struggling to get access to help.
The report in the Sunday Times has lifted the lid on a number of ways Megxit is said to have impacted on William.
William was ‘peacemaker’
Prince William is said to have acted as a “peacemaker” while tensions mounted between Harry and Meghan and the Royal Family in the run-up to the couple’s wedding.
Pressures ahead of the big day are said to have reached boiling point when a bridesmaid fitting left both Kate and Meghan in tears.
The Duchess of Cambridge bought flowers to apologise for her part to play after the row with Meghan telling Oprah the incident marked a “turning point” in her relationship with the royal family.
Speaking to the Sunday Times, a source said: “Every time there was a drama, or a member of staff on the verge of quitting, William would personally try and sort it out.”
Megxit drama ‘still raw’
Prince William is “very upset” and “reeling” over the bombshell claims made by his younger brother Prince Harry and sister-in-law Meghan Markle during their Oprah interview, friends claim.
Pals of the Duke of Cambridge have reportedly said the Megxit drama is “still raw” and the future king’s head “is all over the place” after Harry confirmed the rift between them continues.
Harry told Oprah that he and William are on “different paths” and there is “space” between them, while Meghan claimed an unnamed royal made a racist comment about Archie and the institution didn’t help her through her mental health struggles.
The two brothers ‘shared everything’
However, an aide said that now, a year after the Sussexes left for California, William misses Harry because they “shared everything”.
They said: “Once he got over the anger of how things happened, he was left with the absence of his brother.
“They shared everything about their lives, an office, a foundation, meetings together most days and there was a lot of fun along the way. He’ll miss it for ever.”
Prince William denies ‘being trapped’
Prince William is said to have rubbished his brother’s claims that he is “trapped” by royal life.
Harry claimed his brother and father were shackled by life in the Royal Family in the tell-all interview with Oprah.
But according to an in-depth Sunday Times profile of the future King, William plans to be a “robust” ambassador for the Crown when he takes the throne.
A source close to the Duke of Cambridge told the newspaper said Harry’s interview left William “reeling.”
Harry told the world that William was trapped within “the system … My brother can’t leave that system, but I have.”
Rift with Harry brought William closer to Charles
Friends have said the rift with Harry has brought Prince William closer to his dad Charles.
There has been a “renaissance” in their relationship, sources added.
William also feels his relationship with his grandmother has “massively improved” in recent years and their views are “more aligned than ever”, the Sunday Times profile added.
William constantly talks to kids about Diana
Prince William is said to constantly talk to his children about Granny Diana at bedtime s o that they know “there are two grandmothers in their lives”.
William has said he is determined that the grandchildren Diana never knew should “know who she was and that she existed”.
Kensington Palace refused to comment on the story.
